Radiation Therapy in the Treatment of Desmoid Tumors

Abstract
Desmoid tumor is a benign neoplasm which arises from musculo-aponeurotic or mesenteric tissues and has typically and infiltrating border. It frequently recurs after surgical resection alone and therefore radiation therapy has been used to control
residual disease at resection margins and to treat the unresectable and recurrent disease. This study reports the experience with 8 cases of desmoid tumors treated between December of 1983 and November of 1991 in the Department of Radiation
Oncology at
Inje Midical College Seoul Paik Hospital. Follow-up period ranges from 1 to 104 monthes with median follow-up period of 46 monthes. Six patients received postoperative irradiation and 2 patients received primary radiotherapy. Among 7 evaluable
patients,
2 of 5 patients wit postoperative and all 2 patients with primary radiotherapy had local control. Local control rate in relation with anatomic site, tumor volume and radiation dose was analysed.
From our limited experience, we could recommend the radiation therapy to improve the local conrol of desmoid tumors postoperatively as well as primarily in case of unresectable disease.
